" Ithaca" By Constantine P. Cavafy

"And if you find her poor, Ithaca has not deceived you.
Wise as you have become, with so much experience,
you must already have understood what Ithacas mean."

This stanza of Cavafy's poem Ithaca expresses Odysseus' disappointment when he returns home to his land of Ithaca. Odysseus has been so many wonderful places in the last twenty years that Ithaca seems like a run down place. Since returning home to Ithaca has been his goal for the past twenty years, he probably thought that the feeling of being home would be the best feeling, or he thought very highly of the appearance without thinking about the changes its probably gone through the past twenty years he has been gone. Odysseus gets the feeling of bore and wants to leave Ithaca. The last line of this stanza expresses the feeling of relief, yet also lets Odysseus know that it's the final destination and he better have done everything that he has wanted to do in life. Odysseus thought very highly of Ithaca on his journey home, therefore becoming disappointed once he returns.
