LOTF Chapter 12: The Fire Flushing Out Ralph (Question 8)

At the end of the book Lord Of The Flies, the hunters are hunting Ralph and trying to kill him. Almost the entire book Ralph and Jack don't see eye to eye which foreshadows battle or war. When searching for Ralph the hunters create a huge fire in attempt to "flush him out". This is ironic because fire represents civilization, or communication, everything the hunters were against or didn't agree with. Ralph always had to remind some of the hunters to keep the fire going and this time they made a gigantic fire that kept going. It is also ironic because they would use the fire to cook whatever they hunted. Another way that the final fire is ironic is because civilization always wanted to be rescued and thats what happened when the hunters, who never really wanted to be rescued, started the fire. When the naval officer saw the fire from a plane, he came down to the island to rescue the boys. The big, huge, final fire was very important in the ending of Lord Of The Flies.
