Golding's Purpose of Little Ones Playing in the Sand and in the Pool

In chapter three, the author William Golding introduces the scene where little ones are playing in the sand and in the pool. I think the reason why he introduces it is to show that they other kids aren't working. The kids wont work for that long, they are willing to work, but not for very long at all.I'm guessing that since this group of children are so well treated; since they are on this island and not on a train like how the other kids were, that they aren't used to having to work like how they have to now. The only little kid that helps most of the time is Simon, who knows the island very well. I am anxious to know if the younger kids will help out with all of the work.
