LOTF: "Keep the fire going."

In chapter five of Lord Of the Flies, Ralph starts to question his leadership. When discussing the matter with Piggy and Simon, they immediately disagree and beg him to remain the leader. Simon states " Keep the fire going. " on page 82. This quote could symbolize and mean many things. One symbol that relates to the quote is the fire on top of the mountain. The groups goal is to keep the fire going the whole time for security. Ralph always makes sure that the hunters are making sure that the fire is always going. Simon could've also meant, keep being the leader, keep us alive. Piggy especially doesn't want Jack to be the leader because he is afraid of Jack, and he doesn't want to die because once Jack is the leader, civilization no longer exist on the island. Piggy is being the id by putting himself first and caring for his own safety. Simon didn't want Jack to be the leader because he believes that he would hurt everyone on the island, Simon is also looking out for the littluns, so that is showing his caring. Piggy and Simon most definitely don't want Jack to be the leader, they want to keep civilization, and they don't want the island to turn into savagery.
